Do you need a hog to hunt for truffles?

The only sustainable way of farming truffles involves using an animal. While historically truffle hogs have been used for finding truffles, newer truffler hunters use trained dogs. Truffle hogs were used historically since they have a natural affinity for truffles, and seek them out without any training. Most dogs can be trained to hunt for truffles, and they are less likely to eat them if they find them.

Truffle oil is a truffle-infused extra virgin olive oil. The proper way of making truffle oil is by pressing or soaking truffles in extra virgin olive oil. However, some producers of truffle oil have begun using synthetic chemicals that 'taste' like truffles.

What is a truffle dog?

Truffle dogs are dogs that have been trained to hunt truffle. The traditional truffle dog breed is a Lagotto Romagnolo, though any dog that has been trained to sniff out truffles can be considered a truffle dog.

Can you just farm truffles?

Yes and no. While there is no way to really farm truffles, they tend to grow in certain regions of the world with certain species of trees. The closest thing we have to truffle farms are new forests. The difficulty in farming truffles at large scale is what makes them so expensive.
